Pinworms are white, parasitic worms that can live in the large intestine of humans. They are about one-half inch long. While the infected person sleeps, female pinworms leave the intestinal tract and lay their eggs on the skin around the anus. The eggs are laid in a sticky, jelly-like substance that, along with the wriggling of the female pinworm, causes severe itching. Pinworm is the most common worm infection. Both children and adults can be infected, although it’s mostly found in children.

Symptoms of Pinworm Infection:

Commonly the symptoms of Pinworm Infection are

  • Pinworm begins with an itchy feeling around the anus, usually at night under warm sheets.
  • Without treatment, pinworm may give rise to inflammation of the vagina in girls and women.
  •  You can often see pinworms, a 1cm thread-like worm, in your child’s stools or their bottom.
  • Pinworms can rarely migrate into the vagina or urinary tract causing irritation in these regions. Intense itching is again the prominent complaint.
  • Pinworms do not cause abdominal pain, bloody bowel movements, fevers, or poor appetite. If the person has any of these signs or symptoms, they may have a more serious condition and should call a doctor or visit the hospital’s emergency department.

Causes of Pinworm:

  • At night, the female of the pinworm infection leaves his home, located in the lower digestive tract. Leaving the rectum, it lays its eggs in the folds of skin on the rim of the anus.
  • Because eggs survive to 20 days, clothing and bedding are viable environments for them. If one shakes these tissues, eggs can be dispersed into the air and swallowed directly. Once swallowed, they manage to hatch in the intestine and reach their form of adult worms in 2-6 weeks. Adult worms can live for about 3 months and females lay up to 10,000 eggs during their life.
  • Pinworm eggs attached to the surface perianal hatch in 6 hours and the larvae that emerge back into the anus, where they reside to mature in the large intestine. Those who fall in clothing or bedding can survive up to 3 weeks at room temperature while waiting for helping hands to carry in their mouths. Humans are the only natural host of pinworms.

Home Remedies for Pinworms:

  • Wash hands carefully and frequently. Frequent hand-washing before eating and after using the toilet is a part of pinworm home remedy and is very important for preventing the spread of infection.
  • Mastering the impulse to scratch. Itching around the anus due to pinworm infection usually occurs at night. The pinworm home remedy recommend wearing gloves, pajamas, and close clothing may help prevent scratching.
  • Pinworm eggs can get under the fingernails when scratching. Cutting nails very short may help prevent eggs from sticking. Discourage thumb sucking as this is the primary pinworm infection source in children.
  • Wash clothes, sheets and pajamas. Another important pinworm home remedy guideline is washing clothes and bedding and drying them at high temperatures from the first day of treatment may help prevent re infection.
  • Bathe carefully and every day, if you want to ensure a rigorous hygiene of the anus area. This way pinworm eggs will be removed.

Prevention of Pinworms:

Bathe when you wake up to help reduce the egg contamination. Change and wash your underwear each day. Frequent changing of night clothes are recommended. Change underwear, night clothes, and sheets after each treatment. Because the eggs are sensitive to sunlight, open blinds or curtains in bedrooms during the day. Personal hygiene should include washing hands after going to the toilet, before eating and after changing diapers. Trim the fingernails short.  Discourage nail-biting and scratching bare anal areas. These practices help reduce the risk of continuous self-reinfection.  If you are a woman and never shaven or waxed before, it’s best that you avoid it. Ingrown hairs normally happen as a result of tweezing, shaving and waxing. Before you shave, soften your skin with moist warm cloth for several minutes. Very gently lift out any ingrown hair before shaving. Use a single track razor instead of a double tract to avoid the hair from drawing back in.
